Whileall of us were dreading to hand in our assignments and/or studying for our midsemester exams, we actually missed out on a fantastic Chinese tradition – theMid Autumn Festival or more commonly known as the Mooncake Festival back homein Malaysia. Fear not me mateys, UQMSA came to the rescue! We may have beenlate in organising it, but we had it!

Ramadhan Bazaar

Apologies for this late write up on ourRamadhan Bazaar but fret not, it is here finally.

Like our fellowmembers, we are always on the lookout for a taste of home. Since it was themonth of Ramadhan, we had the great idea of organizing a Ramadhan Bazaar sothat our fellow Malaysian can savor their taste buds with some authenticMalaysian food, which I can safely is very hard to find in Brisbane. Not onlythat, we took this opportunity to showcase to students from other countries howwe do things back in Malaysia during the Ramadhan period. Namely, going to ‘pasarmalam’ (night market) to buy some awesomely-made food.

The thing that surprised me the most washow fast the food ran out, even though we have already increased the quantityfrom our Makan Night, which we had during the first semester. We reallyapologize to those who weren’t able to get what they wanted.

Just look at the amount of people,ridiculous in a good way :D

For this year’s Ramadhan Bazaar, we had thepleasure of having UQ Indonesia Student Association and Macau StudentAssociation join us, which increased the variety of food. Did anybody managedto try the soya bean from MACSA and the fried chicken from UQISA? I was goingto buy some fried chicken from UQISA but they sold out L

As above, some people have already got a reply upon submitting their resumes! Deadline for Resume Submissions is just a few more days away, you have until the 25th of September to submit your Resumes if you want to stand a chance to land an interview with the participating companies.

UQMSA Interview Workshop (27/8/2011)

A couple of weeks back, UQMSA put togetheran Interview Workshop Session for our members. It's a follow up to the ResumeWriting Workshop that was organized in the first semester. The overall aims ofthese workshops are to prepare our members to stand the best chance of gettingemployed, no matter what field of work they are interested in.

As part of the workshop, there was aninteractive section for members to practice answering some common interviewquestions they are likely to face. I don’t know how our members are going to doas potential interviewees but with stares like these they could always work asinterviewers!

Outdoor Excursion

Dear Members,

Sick of studying for Mid Semester Exams and all those piles of assignments? Already looking forward to the Spring Break? Guess what, so are we! And boy do we have a surprise lined up for all of you! =D

UQMSA will be planning an outdoor excursion for the 24th of September and we've got a bunch of fun activities lined up for all of you!

We'll be heading down to the Sunshine Coast, picking up some Strawberries along our way. Then we will challenge theNoosa National Park while enjoying the breath-taking scenery along the coast, you might even spot some wild koalas if you're lucky. All that sounds great but we've still got more to offer. The trip will be concluded with a romantic sunset view from the Glass House Mountains.

Best of all, everything is for as little as $33. YES, it's $33 including a meal!! So what are you waiting for? Come and meet us at our booth at the usual area just outside STA Travels starting from tomorrow (Wednesday) and Thursday between 11am-2pm.

Your UQMSA Comittee has brought you the Resume-writing Workshop, and are in the midst of organizing the Interview Workshop. And now we ask the question: Are you graduating soon? Are you right now considering your future career path and options?

Well you’re in luck! UQMSA will be working with GRADUAN to bring you the GRADUAN Australian Recruitment Drive 2011! Time to put what you’ve learned in these workshops to good good use!

UQMSA’s “Jom Watch AFL”

And so the dreaded mid-semester period came, with its load of tear-inducing stress, assignments that just won’t write themselves up, and exams that reduce students to hair-pulling and overeating. And of course, UQMSA came to the rescue (as always la) with our ready shot of fun! :P

Over 30 of us headed in one big, noisy rombongan to the Gabba to experience football as the Aussies know it J It was the Brisbane Lions VS North Melbourne. Before this, the Lions were win-less in the new season with 7-straight losses. And then came our Malaysian gang. The rest, as they say, is history, as evidenced by the in-depth statistical analysis below :

The Brisbane Singa started the game in nervous fashion in a match that was really tight, but they eventually managed to outscore their opponents from Melbourne during the 4^th quarter. Truly a night to remember for every one of us as we cheered like crazy for every pass, tackle and goal.

MAMAK NIGHT teaser

UQMSA's "Jom Watch AFL !" might be over and it sure was a great experience for all of us who went to watch the Brisbane Lions beat North Melbourne!

But in truth us Malaysian are crazy about one thing and one thing only. And that's our food!! So the event we've all been waiting for is here!

UQMSA's traditional semester-ender, and our BIGGEST event of the Sem, MAMAK NIGHT, is just around the corner!!

The weather might be getting cold, you might be jam packed with assignments and exams might not be too far off but there is no better way to cheer yourself and get yourself pumped up than some good old Malaysian food!

UQ's Diversity Week, in which the university celebrates the diversity of cultures on campus. The Cultural Fiesta organized by the UQ Union is part of Diversity Week, and aims to showcase the cultural displays of the different countries that UQ's international students hail from. The event will feature student clubs showcasing their natural foods, costumes, dance, plus roving performers, stalls, dancing dragons and more. The outdoor celebration in Campbell Place between 10am-2pm is an open invitation to all UQ students to join in the fun.

And leading proudly will be our Malaysian Stall, featuring our wonderful cultural diversity, our awesome traditional costumes, and samplings of the best food in the world: Malaysian Food!

Last week’s Makan Night was a big hit! J Thanks to everyone who came! I hope you guys did enjoy the food we served as I most certainly did! UQMSA would also like to take this opportunity to apologize to those who did not get to buy any food due to the surprisingly large crowd.. but don’t fret as UQMSA will be organizing more ‘makan sessions’ and do our very best to cater for all members. Every good deed helps to kindle this feeling of joy within us

This post does not include bikinis and swimming trunks that surely inspire a worthy trip or a perfect excuse to hit the beach to attempt a new skill: surfing, or rock climbing gears attached to your bodies to conquer the climbing walls. But it DOES capture the atmosphere of enthusiasm in a meeting room where the Volunteer Refugee Tutoring and Community Support (VoRTCS) Interview and Information session took place two Sundays ago. With all ears and hearts wide open, the volunteers were prepared to receive the gist of it all from THIS MAN in the PICTURE BELOW:

Allow me to introduce the presenter of the day and manager of the VORTCS team – Mr Julian Evans, or Jules.

Do not be deceived by this solemn picture of him. Believe me, this British bloke has the most laid back and witty character that can absolutely make you drop your books or pens to just listen to his persuasive speech. His laid back character was consistently portrayed over the session as he would insist that we addressed him as Jules rather than Mr Evans. He started the session by sharing his philosophy of volunteering, quoting, “It is most important to have fun while you’re volunteering and working with your team”. His simple justification was that one should dwell in spirit of fun [and giving] in any voluntary work; otherwise one would not enjoy it, and loses sight of the purpose if the heart was not stirred. Well, something like that =P This drove away the tension in the air. Jules went on to enlighten us further on the expectations of being a refugee volunteer tutor. The majority, if not all, were positively swayed by Jules’ short and sweet presentation, resulting in a large number of sign-ups for this exciting voluntary work. He really sold the Refugee Tutoring Program to us.

Hope things have been awesome, and that the mid-semester exams are all out of the way already :) If you've been missing our past events, no need to fret anymore as our next big excursion is now here! UQMSA will be organizing Jom Watch AFL ! , in which we will all be watching and cheering the Brisbane Lions at The Gabba :D

A bit about Aussie Footy
Australian Rules Football, or Aussie Footy for short, is the one of the most popular sports in this sports-obsessed nation which is Australia. The game itself is a unique blend of soccer, Gaelic football, and rugby, and is considered as one of the unique icons of Australian culture.

And like surfing in the Gold Coast, or patting a koala at Lone Pine, experiencing a live Footy match is something that should not be missed by anyone in Australia!

Okay, enough with exciting you, details of the event are below :)

UQMSA Rock Climbing

Hello EVERYONE! On the 2^nd of April 2011, it was a beautiful morning and the sun was up and shining brightly by 6.30am! However, more importantly, UQMSA had a social rock climbing session held at ROCKSPORTS in FORTITUDE VALLEY!!

8.00am – Chiang arrives at Toowong Train Station!

8.30am – A few participants arrive at the rendezvous point!

9.00am – Everybody arrives except one! (you know who you are!)

9.05am – She finally arrives!! =O

9.11am – Everyone got into the train heading towards the city!

9.55am – Arrived at ROCKSPORTS! Because we were too early, we were told to CHILL!

After Rocksports’ staff finished setting up all the climbing gear, we were given a short introductory lesson! Joel looking very pert, proper and with great makeup!

After the short training, everyone found themselves a partner and went climbing! From here on out, it is just going to be photos of people conquering the climbing walls!

If YOU DID NOT join us for our previous events, no fret! UQMSA has a bucket list of events and programs mapped out for you that screams FUN, EXCITING & TIME WORTHY. But aside from the happening social events (i.e. Mamak Nite, Diversity Week, Laser Tag/Paintball, outdoor excursions etc) which will be rolling out this year, we also believe in giving back to the community and doing our part to help those who are less fortunate.

UQMSA's Refugee Tutoring Drive
Have you ever performed a good deed that made your heart smile? And then have that feel-good satisfaction motivate you to do more now and in the future, whenever & wherever? Yes or no, here's your chance to add another good deed experience onto your impressive good-deed-resume, or at least start the first experience of this feel-good vibe with us! :)

We'd like to introduce & encourage all of you to participate in our first charitable event, UQMSA's REFUGEE TUTORING PROGRAM

The Gist of it (A Message from VoRTCS)

Tutoring program coordinated by Volunteer Refugee Tutoring & Community Support (VoRTCS), a non-profit, non-religious, volunteer-run organization based in Australia and supported by the St. Vincent De Paul Society. UQMSA will be collaborating with them in organizing this drive for our members.
Pairs of volunteer tutors visit the homes of refugee families who have recently arrived in Australia. Most of our families are African (many Sudanese), and we have some from Afghanistan and Iraq also.
Tutors help the children (usually several children per family) with homework and reading/writing skills, and help the parents with conversation skills where needed.
Volunteers can choose the day and time that they visit their family, and can change if needed. Most tutoring visits last for 1-2 hours, and you continue visiting your family for an extended period of time. All of our tutors are volunteers, and we provide insurance for all tutors while they are visiting their family.
VoRTCS will assist all volunteers in applying for a Blue card (compulsory under Queensland Law for working with children), and will provide tutor training and regular support to our tutors

All volunteers will attend an interview session conducted by VoRTCS on the 17th of April (Sunday) from 1-2pm (venue TBA) (during which VoRTCS will help each member apply for a Blue Card), and two compulsory tutor-training sessions in May. These are compulsory procedures we will go through together towards obtaining the Blue card, before we can begin tutoring (we will notify everyone of the time and place once we collect your responses). The actual tutoring drive for our members will probably start NEXT SEMESTER, as it takes 2-3 months to have the Blue Card applications processed.

One great thing about this program is its flexibility! Tutoring sessions can be scheduled to fit your timetable :) We’ll all have busy schedules, no doubt, but we truly believe there is at least ONE HOUR of our time to reach out and bless a soul who’s not as fortunate as we are. So come on fellow Malaysians, let’s set aside that one/one & half/ two hours (absolutely up to you!) to help these people!

Learn to Surf, Sem 1 2011

The weather was great, bikinis and swimming trunks were everywhere. What more can a guy/girl ask for? As usual the day started off behind schedule but that’s kind of expected. The bus ride to Currumbin was comfortable enough thanks to our bus driver, Chris’s awesome bus driving skill. I guess the only annoying thing during the bus ride was when Farhah, our MC of the day kept saying “Can everybody hear me?” each time she spoke into the PA system. Sorry Farhah :P

Overall, I am pretty sure everybody enjoyed themselves that day. Well other than pictures as memories of that day, I’ve got some massive sunburn in the shape of my singlet and my skin is starting to peel now, it’s a bit “geli” . Well, this won’t be a long post of me rambling, I’m just going to put up some pictures and you know, add some weird caption to them. Enjoy

After a very successful Welcoming BBQ to kick off our semester, it's the time of the year for our "Learn to Surf" event before the weather gets too cold :)

Currumbin Alley’s sheltered layout makes it less exposed and open to the prevailing Southerly winds, creating both perfect Learn to Surf conditions and challenging long rides for the experienced surfer.

A wet suit and surfboard will be provided by the surf school. Learn to Surf lessons include instruction in paddling, wave catching, various prone to feet methods, surfboard design and Surf Safety.

PS: Non-surfers will get to laze around the beach and play some games while surfers try to 'Hang ten" :D

A great relief for the blogger as editing html codes is not an easy task at all especially it is time and energy consuming for a newbie.

UQ Pre-departure Session in Malaysia

There is an information session in Malaysia and we would like to invite you to learn more about what UQ offers you and to prepare you for study in Australia, you and your family are invited to attend the following pre-departure sessions:

Hello People! Here’s an overdue update from UQMSA 2010!

As you all know, we had our AGM on the 12th of October. Everyone’s very eager to know who’s the next committee for year 2010/2011 right? I’m not going to reveal it to you until you get to the end of the post. Juuuusttt kiddinggg. No actually, I’m not kidding.

Anyways, THANK YOU guys for turning up for the AGM and exercised your rights to nominate and vote for your next UQMSA EXCO Members. Several valuable inputs were also given by members. Ribuan Terima Kasih for that!

Its been a very rewarding year for the committee of 2010. Seeing you guys enjoying the events we’ve organized and the thank-you-s from you guys was really what kept us going. So we will also like you guys to do the same for the next committee! UQMSA ROCKS YOUR SOCKS YO!

After AGM, we all headed to BEL Rooftop Terrace for the much awaited biggest event of the year, Mamak Night Sem 2! We had a list of delicious food lining up for the members as usual, and we were all so bloated after the night :)

Blog: UQMSA Laser Tag Social Game

Hello people! Hope the mid-semester break is treating you the way it should be treating you! A lot of you must have been catching up with work buuuttt, some of you surely had fun on the very first day of the break, last Saturday, we went Laser Tagging!

Was it fun? No words can possibly describe how fun it was! 6 teams of 8 members played round robin, meaning all teams get to play against each other!

After some briefing and making sure of the games’ mission, and some team cheering, the battle began!

We saw Team C and Team E marching into the battlefield at around 6pm. The first game was a close ~~bloody~~ fight and it was so significant coz it stroke a tinge of excitement for the following teams as it marks the beginning of the competition!

For the rest of the night, we saw team building, team bonding, team spirit, inter-team competition, more team cheering, team laughing, team eating, team meeting (to figure out strategies), team spying, team chatting, team chilling, team fighting and… …

After completing all 15 rounds of games, we reached the climax of the night. It was time to declare the winner of the night… NOT. We still had some time and guess what, ALL 6 TEAMS INVADED THE BATTLEFIELD AND FOUGHT AGAINST EACH OTHER! Now how’s that? We had 2 extra games where all 6 teams, all 48 of us, went into the battlefield and each team had to face off 5 other teams!

This was probably the most exciting part for most of us. There were screaming, lots of running and hiding and also, teams roaring at each other while shooting each other down! :D

We certainly had lots of fun!

Now aren’t you excited to know which team won the game? Is it Team A which was led by Michael? Or the happy Team B with pretty S.H.E.? Or naughty Team C? Or Team D with only 2 girls? Or Team E who wore the most red colour? Or Team F led by the almighty UQMSA President? The glorious victory of the night goes to… … Team…… … … … … …

UQMSA Mid Autumn Fetival Movie Night

UQMSA Social LaserForce!!!

Hello People!

Stress with Midsems and assignment due dates? Here’s something exciting to look forward to!

UQMSA will be organizing a "UQMSA Social Laserforce" game. Laserforce is a live action laser tag game (Think paintball but with laser instead).

Details:
Date : 25th September 2010 (Saturday)
Time : 5.30pm to 9.30pm
Location : Laserforce, Woolloongabba.
Cost : AUD 10 (include dinner + drinks; tentative menu is nasi minyak ayam masak merah + a can of coke)
Transport: Bus 209, 269 or 109. Gather at UQ Lakes first at 4.40pm

Game format:
6 teams.
Each team consist of 8 players.
Members can choose to select own team members or leave it to be arranged by the organizing committee.
Round-robin format. Each team will get to face the other 5 teams. So expect to play at least 5 games. Would have more if time permits.
UQMSA has the whole location booked out to us. So expect full privacy and come have fun with our fellow members.

Those interested can come to our booth next Tuesday (14th) and Wednesday (15th) at 11.00am to 2.00pm our usual spot at the union at the side of STA Travel to register.
Members must pay the full amount of AUD10 while registering. Deposits will not be accepted.

Come along, have heaps of fun and release some stress with us! :D
