UQMSA Market Day Sem1, 2012

So the new semester begins, and how do we know that?
There was Market Day of course!
Market Day is UQ Union’s official welcome event where all students get to pick and choose which clubs and societies they want to be involved with throughout the year.

Well a lot of you guys sure made the right choice because  UQMSA  hit a new record for sign-ups of new members! Guess being last year’s international club of the year sure helps eh? =D
It was great to see fellow Malaysians, both new members and old members turn up to sign up with us on the day.
What made it even better was that it wasn’t just Malaysians who wanted to be a part of our awesome little club, we had people from Australia, Singapore, Thailand, Taiwan, Chinese and Hong Kong signing up with us too! Or maybe it was the free food that we were offering to those who signed up that did the trick! =P
People snacking away while waiting in line to sign-up!
And ouh man, did we have long lines!

Market Day turnout out great and we ended the day with more than 300 members signing up with  UQMSA !
If that’s not a good way to start off the semester I don’t know what is =)

Warmest Regards,
UQMSA Committee

Ramadhan Bazaar

Apologies for this late write up on our Ramadhan Bazaar but fret not, it is here finally.

Like our fellow members, we are always on the lookout for a taste of home. Since it was the month of Ramadhan, we had the great idea of organizing a Ramadhan Bazaar so that our fellow Malaysian can savor their taste buds with some authentic Malaysian food, which I can safely is very hard to find in Brisbane. Not only that, we took this opportunity to showcase to students from other countries how we do things back in Malaysia during the Ramadhan period. Namely, going to ‘pasar malam’ (night market) to buy some awesomely-made food.

The thing that surprised me the most was how fast the food ran out, even though we have already increased the quantity from our Makan Night, which we had during the first semester. We really apologize to those who weren’t able to get what they wanted.

Just look at the amount of people, ridiculous in a good way :D
For this year’s Ramadhan Bazaar, we had the pleasure of having UQ Indonesia Student Association and Macau Student Association join us, which increased the variety of food. Did anybody managed to try the soya bean from MACSA and the fried chicken from UQISA? I was going to buy some fried chicken from UQISA but they sold out L

Our pals from UQISA

Friends from MACSA
I sure wish UQMSA will organize another gathering which involves food. Wait, I think they are and it’s coming soon, so keep an eye out ;)

On behalf of the committee this is Jiansheng, saying, see you soon J

Every good deed helps to kindle this feeling of joy within us

This post does not include bikinis and swimming trunks that surely inspire a worthy trip or a perfect excuse to hit the beach to attempt a new skill: surfing, or rock climbing gears attached to your bodies to conquer the climbing walls. But it DOES capture the atmosphere of enthusiasm in a meeting room where the Volunteer Refugee Tutoring and Community Support (VoRTCS) Interview and Information session took place two Sundays ago. With all ears and hearts wide open, the volunteers were prepared to receive the gist of it all from THIS MAN in the PICTURE BELOW:

clip_image002

Allow me to introduce the presenter of the day and manager of the VORTCS team – Mr Julian Evans, or Jules.

Do not be deceived by this solemn picture of him. Believe me, this British bloke has the most laid back and witty character that can absolutely make you drop your books or pens to just listen to his persuasive speech.  His laid back character was consistently portrayed over the session as he would insist that we addressed him as Jules rather than Mr Evans. He started the session by sharing his philosophy of volunteering, quoting, “It is most important to have fun while you’re volunteering and working with your team”. His simple justification was that one should dwell in spirit of fun [and giving] in any voluntary work; otherwise one would not enjoy it, and loses sight of the purpose if the heart was not stirred. Well, something like that =P This drove away the tension in the air. Jules went on to enlighten us further on the expectations of being a refugee volunteer tutor. The majority, if not all, were positively swayed by Jules’ short and sweet presentation, resulting in a large number of sign-ups for this exciting voluntary work. He really sold the Refugee Tutoring Program to us.

All ears and eyes glued to Jules J

clip_image004

See! This black and white photo is a vivid proof that he literally got them hypnotised! @.@ Hee hee, in a positive way of course J clip_image006

Forms were handed to every attendee before the group interviews commenced J

clip_image018

Only some paper work and submission of the required documents before the volunteers are well on their way to receive their Blue Cards and begin the journey as volunteer refugee tutors! J

MALAYSIA BOLEH ! woohoo!

Double WOOHOO for what we had for light refreshments after the session!

clip_image020

clip_image022

=D  Nothing like these two pictures that do show our affection for food! (particularly karipap!)

To all volunteers who attended this information and interview session as well as VoRTCS training session 1 on 9th May 2011, the UQMSA committee and VoRTCS team would like to give you a big THANK YOU for showing a keen interest to be part of this volunteer program!

For more information, check out http://www.refugeetutoring.org

Should you have any inquiries, please feel free to email Jules - julian.evans@svdpqld.org.au

Get ready for this exciting part of your journey & keep the passion for people alive! It certainly will be a rewarding experience for you. So if you think this voluntary work is for you and you’re still up for the challenge, SEE YOU at the 2nd training session!  ;)

Love & peace,

Jess J & UQMSA Committee

Mamak Nite's finalised details & other UQMSA news.

Hey guys,

It's confirmed! The first Mamak Nite for this year is this coming Wednesday, 4th of April. It starts at 5:30 pm, Schonell Theatre 2 and we estimate that it will last till around 10 pm. The movie 'Cinta' will be screening at 8 pm sharp. Don't forget to bring your membership cards for verification as non-members will have to pay an entrance fee of $3 for this event. Also, remember to sign up for the Moreton Island one-day tour and bring the fee of $90. If you still haven't signed up with UQMSA for 2007, this is your chance to do so and meet the rest of us! Just a reminder that it will only cost you $7 for the entire year.

On other non-Mamak Nite related news, PPMQ (Persatuan Pelajar-Pelajar Melayu Queensland) will be holding a free BBQ at Guyatt Park on the 8th of April from 10 am onwards and there will be a football game in the evening. Also, the Malaysian Students Department will be sending two representatives on the 9th of April (Monday) to UQ to meet undergraduate students from 10 am till 12 pm. If you would like to voice any concerns or issues to them or would just like to get to know your representatives better, then do try to make it. We will announce the venue of this meeting closer to the date.

Mamak Nite #1 for 2007

The first Mamak Nite for the year is here, all you hungry Malaysians! At this free event, we'll be selling your favourite food from home at unbelievable prices because we're not out to make any profit at all. The menu we have come up with is:

1) Nasi lemak
2) Rendang ayam
3) Roti canai
4) Sardine curry
5) Pau
6) Onde-onde
7) Sardine rolls
8) Mee Soto

So make sure you're available on the 4th of April, next Wednesday!

Mamak Nite will kick off at 5:30 pm and after all that eating, we will be screening the movie 'Cinta' at 8 pm sharp. Also, don't forget to sign up for the Moreton Island 1-day tour that night. The $90 fee that only applies to UQMSA members is inclusive of morning tea, lunch, transportation, National Park fee, and all activities (normally priced at $25 each) so this is a very good deal that you shouldn't miss out on! Unless, of course, you prefer to pay $119!!

We'll be announcing the venue for Mamak Nite soon enough (it's definitely going to be held at uni) so watch this space and check your e-mails. Make sure you bring your membership cards. You can also bring your friends who are non-members but they will be asked to pay $3 at the door.

We can't wait!! :)

P/S: Those of you who haven't signed up with UQMSA, you can still do so on that night. The fee is only $7 for the entire year. You can also collect your membership card if you haven't done so.
