Merdeka Week Events

Although this is already on the Merdeka Celebration 2007 website, I just thought I'd post a short event calendar here for everyone:

1st September: Merdeka Fest 2007 Gathering
2nd September: Pantun Merdeka Competition
5th September: Merdeka Movie Screening
7th September: Solat Hajat Merdeka
8th September: Merdeka Gala Dinner

Do go to the website for a more detailed description of every event, including times, dates and venues.

Tickets sales were absolutely fantastic yesterday; isn't it just so typically Malaysian for everyone to buy tickets on the last day that we open our booth? Lol! I think it's safe to say that we are about to sell out since as of yesterday, only one table was left. It's only a bit more than a week away but I think I speak for all the committees when I say we are so hyped about all the performances, great food, lucky draw prizes and all that in Brisbane's best function venue! This Merdeka Celebration is going to be awesome and well-worthy of our 50th year of independence.

Alright, everyone. Are you ready for the Malaysian Gathering? ;)

Merdeka Gala Dinner 2007

Hello everyone!!

Thanks for coming to our BBQ this afternoon and we hope everyone has enjoyed it as much as we did!! Despite the hot sun, it was great meeting both our old and new members again. Quite a number of you guys were actually enquiring about the Merdeka Gala Dinner and here you go, a detailed email on it!!

The Merdeka Gala Dinner is a collaboration between several Malaysian associations around Brisbane, including UQMSA. More efforts and funds have been put in this year because it's our 50th Anniversary and also because of the huge success of the event in the previous years. Our theme this year is "A Walk Back Into History" and the dinner will be held in the Brisbane Convention & Exhibition Centre on the 8th September 2007 from 6.30pm to 12am. Guests are required to dress in traditional or formal attires.

Tickets are priced at AUD60 for non-Malaysians, AUD55 for Malaysians and AUD30 for chidren 12 & under. But, as long as you're a UQMSA member, you'll get the Malaysian price at AUD55. What's more, if you buy in pairs, you'll only have to pay AUD105 instead of AUD110. We're going to our limits in subsidizing you guys, don't you just love us?

We'll be selling the tickets starting next week, all the way till a week before the event. So get your tickets asap before we run out of them!! Our booth will be set up near main refect next Thursday from 12pm to 4pm and for the consecutive 2 weeks, it'll be on Wednesday from 12pm to 4pm as well.

Wanna know what's worth the AUD55 you're paying for?
The event includes performances such as silat, band performances, multicultural dance, Sumazau dance, choir performances and so on. Not forgetting our exotic Malaysian cuisine!! Just one more thing, there'll be lucky draws!! Come on, be patriotic for our 50th!!

If you guys have any enquiries, please visit the event website at www.merdeka2007.cjb.net or just drop us an email.

Warm regards,
Your committee of 2007

Free Movie!

Hello everyone!

Our activity for the month of May? We'll be having a free screening of Mukhsin in the Abel Smith Lecture Theatre this Friday from 7:30 onwards! It should take no longer than 2 hours, for all you party animals who normally have big plans for Friday nights, so you can still head out afterwards. :) It's a great movie directed by Yasmin Ahmad of the Sepet and Gubra fame so you should know what a good time you're in for. Plus, there's always our company, which *ahem* is of course, awesome. :P It's also got Malay subtitles. Do come along! Any of your interested friends can join the fun too!

See ya there! :)

Moreton Bay 1 Day Tour

Attention : All those who signed up for the 1 Day Tour

Hi everyone!

Hope you all remember that the 1 day trip to Moreton Island is on 15 April, this Sunday (I apologize for the late reminder). We will be leaving the UQ Lakes bus stop at 7 am (yes, that's 7 in the MORNING) and the trip shall end about 6 pm. So please be there by 6.45am, at the latest, because we really do NOT want to delay the trip as it would ruin the entire itinerary.

Ok, just a recap, in case your vision went all fuzzy in that paragraph.

Sunday, 15 April 2007
Gathering at UQ lakes bus stop
be there by 6.45 AM

To those who has not paid, please make sure you bring the exact amount of cash (we will not have any spare change on that day) along with your membership card. There are a fair few places left, so if there's anyone who has not registered, but would like to come along, drop us an email RIGHT NOW at uniqmsa@gmail.com and pray hard that we read it and give you a reply before Sunday morning (I promise to check the email on Saturday night). Just a reminder, it's $90 for members, $95 for non-members and $80 for children.

Pack along your sunblock lotion, sunnies, bathers and we'll see you there!

Additional UQMSA Sponsor

Great news, guys!

We've managed to secure another sponsor for UQMSA! Every member is entitled to 15% off your total bill at Jindalee Oriental, a Malaysian-Chinese restaurant located at the Jindalee Homemaker City that's along the 450 bus route (get off after the small roundabout and when you see the big McDonald's sign coming up!). Just remember to bring and show your membership card.

Also, you should have received the entry form and flyer on the Inter-Varsity Games. Apparently, I forwarded an outdated copy to everyone, so I had to send out another email with the new copy. Oops! Sorry about that, guys. Anyway, if you haven't received them, please e-mail uniqmsa@gmail.com with the subject 'Inter-Varsity Games' and we will forward a copy to you, or just visit the MASCA QLD website.

Hope your holidays are going well!

Sand boarding and tobogganing.
Body boarding and body surfing.
Thick eucalypt forest and soft sandy beach.

If any one of those raised your eyebrows, then it’s time to gear up!

Where? Moreton Island (duh!)
When? April 15, 2007 (Sunday) 7am – 6pm
How much? Members : AUS$ 90 , Non members : AUS$ 95 , Children : AUS$ 80

Description of the tour as described by the agency:

“Tour starts with a luxury cruise aboard MiCat across beautiful Moreton Bay to Moreton Island. On arrival we board our 4WD and drive of the ferry directly on to the beach. Moreton Island is the worlds third largest sand island of which 98% is a protected National Park, with no sealed roads, 4WD is the only mode of transport! Our first activity is to get straight into sand boarding and tobogganing. This has to be done as early as possible in the day as summer temperatures get up to 36deg. This is awesome fun, high speed, high adrenalin! Moreton Bay Escapes provide both lie down toboggans as well as stand up boards. Next stop we cross the island to the Open Beach. We travel through thick eucalypt forest, featuring beautiful Xanthorrhoea (Grass Trees) up to 250 years old. The open beach is 38km long of uninterrupted surf beach. Boogy Boarding and body surfing is next! We are off to North Point and Honeymoon Bay’s secluded beach with great safe surf beaches. After a picnic lunch we are off to Cape Moreton Lighthouse and Information centre. This imposing rock Headland is 80m above sea level and gives us commanding views across all of Moreton Island and the beautiful Glass House Mountains. Look out to sea and spot Dolphins, Turtles and Whales (June To October). Moreton Island is home to hundreds of different birds, featuring White Bellied Sea Eagles, Pied Oyster Catchers, Pelicans and thousands of wadding birds. Our last stop is Blue Lagoon, one of Moreton Island’s beautiful fresh water lakes. Take a dip and soak up the naturally occurring tea tree oils (the fountain of youth) Once rejuvenated to return to MiCat for our beautiful cruise home. What a day!”

Top 20 Malaysian Companies

Hi everyone!

Last week, a few of us on the committee met up with Nicole Andronicus, the UQ International Employment Services Manager for the Faculty of Business, Economics & Law. She told us that roughly three years ago, Malaysian students under the BEL Faculty compiled a list of the top 20 companies that we would like to work for upon graduation. We think that it would be highly beneficial to re-compile this list as there might have been a change in the list over these few years and she will be able to initiate and maintain contact with these companies, especially any new ones, on our behalf. Therefore, we would like to request that students under the BEL Faculty leave a comment with a list of companies that you would like to work for upon graduation or reply our e-mail on this issue.

(Currently, the committee is trying to establish if we can possibly seek the guidance of other faculties with regards to future employment)

Also, Nicole stressed the importance of signing up to the UQ Career Hub ( http://careerhub.uq.edu.au), the university's free online employment service where UQ students and graduates can search for:
  • All types of degree-related employment opportunities
  • Upcoming career and employment events/workshops
  • Online career resources and planning
Don't forget to sign up for it. Hope to hear from you about your list of top 20 companies you would like to work for in the future.

Thanks to all those who turned up on Market Day and signed up! :) I wasn't there myself but I was told that it went great, and some of you brought your friends along, which is beyond awesome. The more the merrier! Soon enough, we'll post up pictures from that day.

If you didn't manage to make it, don't worry because our first BBQ is coming up! You can still meet all the lovely people that make this association. Bring your friends along, and just a reminder that they don't have to be Malaysian! Any UQ student can join our society. Watch this spot cause we'll be announcing all the details very soon but we're 99.9999999% sure that it'll be this Saturday at Roma Street Parklands. Okay, make that 101%!
