UQMSA Rock Climbing 2012

UQMSA ROCK CLIMBING 2012
On Saturday 31 March 2012 most of our members were busy taking their mid-semester exam. Meanwhile there were 20 enthusiastic UQMSA members at the UQMSA social rock climbing session, held at
URBAN CLIMB, WEST END.
The first thing we had to do was choose our new fashion accessories. After choosing some stylish climbing shoes and a very nice looking harness we were ready to climb. I was glad to see that our members helped each other to set up. Go team Malaysia!
After a quick harness check we were given a short introduction on belaying and climbing, for an hour and a half; so much for short. Everyone was excited and brimming with curiosity. The nerves were high though and with people’s first time dealing with their fear of heights there was a lot of new beginnings for everyone!

After understanding the “ABC” (if you want to know what “ABC” is, join our next rock climbing event!) everyone found themselves a partner and went climbing! From here on out there were great, fun moments of climbing and conquering walls!

With much encouragement and people on the floor giving directions as to where to put your right foot or your left arm on the different colour pieces, many made it to the top, exhausted, but with an accomplished smile on their faces!

The event was finished off with a fun climbing competition and the SPIDERWOMAN and SPIDERMAN this year is ELIYANA and AIM
Congratulations!
They were given KUSHI Q (our gold sponsor) food voucher as a reward.
YUM YUM YUM…
The 3 hours climbing session was a great experience for all of us, we learned not to give up, think about every move we make (maybe in life too!) and that heights aren’t so scary (actually maybe they still are).
“Always continue the climb. It is possible for you to do whatever you choose, if you first get to know who you are and are willing to work with a power that is greater than ourselves to do it.”
Thank you to all the members for participating in this challenging event and helping each other out when climbing. You guys are AWESOME!
Special thanks to the Urban staff and our photographer for capturing the day!

UQMSA Outdoor Excursion Sem1, 2012

The  UQMSA  Outdoor Excursion was advertised and promoted as a trip you will be talking about for the rest of the semester. Nay, the rest of your Uni life. Those were big expectations to live up to, and we worked our guts out to make sure things would go as smoothly as possible.
Fortunately, everyone came back alive and well. UQMSA will sign that off as an overwhelming success and record that into the annals of the glorious history of UQMSA
The end.

Jokes jokes. Here is a write-up of the excursion!
The destination this time around was Surfer’s Paradise and Springbrook National Park.
Everyone arrived early in the morning of the 10th of April 2012, bleary-eyed and tired, probably still unhappy of the fact that they were forced to wake up so early during the semester break. Nonetheless, by Malaysian standards, everyone was very punctual! We were only 5-10 minutes late #winning
First on the itinerary, some fun in the sun at Surfer’s Paradise. The weather was amazing for a beach outing! We were positively stoked!

*Intelligence revealed that our treasurer Ms. Lotion had her bikini on. But I am still looking for the pics for the benefit of our members.
Surfer’s Paradise was merely  a detour in our epic trip of course. Onwards to Springbrook!
The amazing thing about the Natural Bridge section of Springbrook was of course, there were 2 wonders of Mother Nature. During the day, you will be mesmerized by the Waterfall in the cave; By night, the haunting beauty of the glowworms will take your breath away.
We kicked off the Springbrook part of the trip with jungle-trekking.
Dayum! The participants were hard to control. We had the photographers who took their own sweet time taking photos, and the quick-walkers hell bent on finishing the track in record time. Needless to say, the overweight guide had to run back and forth getting people to slow down while beckoning the laggers to move:S

Following the track, the participants were ushered to the picnic area for food.
Nom nom nom
The lovely ladies of the committee came up with some fun games to keep us all entertained

As the sky turned dark, it was officially time for the glowworms. Torches were distributed amongst Team Lotion, Team Nana, Team Han Shen, and Team Jocinda.
The glowworms were hauntingly beautiful, but they were a bit short in numbers due to the cold weather. Bummer:(
However, the star-lit skies tugged at our heartstrings:D you never see skies like that in Brisbane!

Soon, it was time to head home. We promptly arrived back in Brisbane after a quick nap.
All in all, it was a fun trip. It wasn’t without its imperfection, but the participants were safe and sound. And most important of all, everyone got to know some new friends from the trip.

UQMSA Brisbane Comedy Festival

Hello everyone!!

Hope things have been great, and that the mid-sem exams are all out of the way already. :)

On the 21st of March, in conjunction with Brisbane Comedy Festival, our very own comedians Harith Iskander, Douglas Lim and Kuah Jen Han took the stage for a night! Well, everyone loves a good laugh! UQMSA in collaboration with the event’s organiser, The Dirty Work Comedy has managed to secure 51 tickets for our members at a discounted rate. It was held at the Brisbane Powerhouse, New Farm.
It feels like bringing a bit of Malaysia back to the people here. As we waited, it became clear that 95% of the audience (who were mainly Malaysians) were getting seriously excited about seeing our local legends performing in Australia.

From the very first act, it was clear why. All had a unique style of observational comedy that made everyday occurrences seem silly-funny, yet still a world away from the terrible ‘what’s up with that?’ jokes we tend to associate with general comedic style. Material drew upon culturally specific experiences next to cracks about Malaysians’ behaviours and even a memorable Justin Bieber pork-based parody! :D

All of us had a great time there and even took the opportunity to take their autographs as well as photos with the comedians. The best thing about the whole event is that not only we laughed a lot throughout the show, we also met a lot of new faces and make new friends! :)

UQMSA would like to thank the members for your support and we will continue to arrange more awesome events for you guys in the future! We’ll keep you updated, so stay tuned! More great events coming up!

See you soon! ;)

UQMSA Welcoming BBQ Sem1, 2012

In typical  UQMSA  style, we had our traditional start of semester event a couple of weeks back.

All we can say is..  WOW! The number of people who turned up for our Welcoming BBQ simply blew us away, it was the biggest turnout we’ve ever had!
What looked like it might be a bloomy, rainy day cleared up and became a beautiful day to spend out and about outdoors in the end.
In typical Aussie BBQ style we had nothing but sausages, and we had to keep churning them out non-stop! Dang we Malaysian sure love (free) food! =P
Food =)
UQMSA: Service with a  smile =)

How many people does it take to make a sausage?

The BBQ started off at around 10am and slowly but surely the crowd got larger and larger and peaked at around 1pm. That’s when we ran out of sausages, wonder if that had anything to do with it =P
It was a really casual event and people were just mingling all over the place and making new friends, exactly what we wanted to see.

People flocking to where the food’s at!

Halfway through, we had a couple of games planned. It was a scavenger hunt and we set our members loose around South Bank Parklands… The groups had to go and complete some of the task we had lined up for them..
Who knew that what “ UQMSA ” looks like when spelt out using our bodies..
The winning groups of our games!

And after the games, people got back to mixing around and making new friends. Check out a few more of the pictures from the event.

All in all, it was a great day out. Looking at all the pictures we’re sure everyone had a great time =)
A great day out, spent with awesome people =)

UQMSA Market Day Sem1, 2012

So the new semester begins, and how do we know that?
There was Market Day of course!
Market Day is UQ Union’s official welcome event where all students get to pick and choose which clubs and societies they want to be involved with throughout the year.

Well a lot of you guys sure made the right choice because  UQMSA  hit a new record for sign-ups of new members! Guess being last year’s international club of the year sure helps eh? =D
It was great to see fellow Malaysians, both new members and old members turn up to sign up with us on the day.
What made it even better was that it wasn’t just Malaysians who wanted to be a part of our awesome little club, we had people from Australia, Singapore, Thailand, Taiwan, Chinese and Hong Kong signing up with us too! Or maybe it was the free food that we were offering to those who signed up that did the trick! =P
People snacking away while waiting in line to sign-up!
And ouh man, did we have long lines!

Market Day turnout out great and we ended the day with more than 300 members signing up with  UQMSA !
If that’s not a good way to start off the semester I don’t know what is =)

Warmest Regards,
UQMSA Committee
