Mamak Nite's finalised details & other UQMSA news.

Hey guys,

It's confirmed! The first Mamak Nite for this year is this coming Wednesday, 4th of April. It starts at 5:30 pm, Schonell Theatre 2 and we estimate that it will last till around 10 pm. The movie 'Cinta' will be screening at 8 pm sharp. Don't forget to bring your membership cards for verification as non-members will have to pay an entrance fee of $3 for this event. Also, remember to sign up for the Moreton Island one-day tour and bring the fee of $90. If you still haven't signed up with UQMSA for 2007, this is your chance to do so and meet the rest of us! Just a reminder that it will only cost you $7 for the entire year.

On other non-Mamak Nite related news, PPMQ (Persatuan Pelajar-Pelajar Melayu Queensland) will be holding a free BBQ at Guyatt Park on the 8th of April from 10 am onwards and there will be a football game in the evening. Also, the Malaysian Students Department will be sending two representatives on the 9th of April (Monday) to UQ to meet undergraduate students from 10 am till 12 pm. If you would like to voice any concerns or issues to them or would just like to get to know your representatives better, then do try to make it. We will announce the venue of this meeting closer to the date.

Alright, hope to see you guys this Wednesday! :)

Sand boarding and tobogganing.
Body boarding and body surfing.
Thick eucalypt forest and soft sandy beach.

If any one of those raised your eyebrows, then it’s time to gear up!

Where? Moreton Island (duh!)
When? April 15, 2007 (Sunday) 7am – 6pm
How much? Members : AUS$ 90 , Non members : AUS$ 95 , Children : AUS$ 80

Description of the tour as described by the agency:

“Tour starts with a luxury cruise aboard MiCat across beautiful Moreton Bay to Moreton Island. On arrival we board our 4WD and drive of the ferry directly on to the beach. Moreton Island is the worlds third largest sand island of which 98% is a protected National Park, with no sealed roads, 4WD is the only mode of transport! Our first activity is to get straight into sand boarding and tobogganing. This has to be done as early as possible in the day as summer temperatures get up to 36deg. This is awesome fun, high speed, high adrenalin! Moreton Bay Escapes provide both lie down toboggans as well as stand up boards. Next stop we cross the island to the Open Beach. We travel through thick eucalypt forest, featuring beautiful Xanthorrhoea (Grass Trees) up to 250 years old. The open beach is 38km long of uninterrupted surf beach. Boogy Boarding and body surfing is next! We are off to North Point and Honeymoon Bay’s secluded beach with great safe surf beaches. After a picnic lunch we are off to Cape Moreton Lighthouse and Information centre. This imposing rock Headland is 80m above sea level and gives us commanding views across all of Moreton Island and the beautiful Glass House Mountains. Look out to sea and spot Dolphins, Turtles and Whales (June To October). Moreton Island is home to hundreds of different birds, featuring White Bellied Sea Eagles, Pied Oyster Catchers, Pelicans and thousands of wadding birds. Our last stop is Blue Lagoon, one of Moreton Island’s beautiful fresh water lakes. Take a dip and soak up the naturally occurring tea tree oils (the fountain of youth) Once rejuvenated to return to MiCat for our beautiful cruise home. What a day!”

Top 20 Malaysian Companies

Hi everyone!

Last week, a few of us on the committee met up with Nicole Andronicus, the UQ International Employment Services Manager for the Faculty of Business, Economics & Law. She told us that roughly three years ago, Malaysian students under the BEL Faculty compiled a list of the top 20 companies that we would like to work for upon graduation. We think that it would be highly beneficial to re-compile this list as there might have been a change in the list over these few years and she will be able to initiate and maintain contact with these companies, especially any new ones, on our behalf. Therefore, we would like to request that students under the BEL Faculty leave a comment with a list of companies that you would like to work for upon graduation or reply our e-mail on this issue.

(Currently, the committee is trying to establish if we can possibly seek the guidance of other faculties with regards to future employment)

Also, Nicole stressed the importance of signing up to the UQ Career Hub ( http://careerhub.uq.edu.au), the university's free online employment service where UQ students and graduates can search for:
  • All types of degree-related employment opportunities
  • Upcoming career and employment events/workshops
  • Online career resources and planning
Don't forget to sign up for it. Hope to hear from you about your list of top 20 companies you would like to work for in the future.
