Saturday 27th of March was an unforgettable day for 36 odd members of UQMSA.
A week before, the Events-Date-Selection Committee seemed to have made a very bad call in choosing 27th March, as Cyclone Ului lashed the central coast of Queensland. Backup plans and contingencies had to be drawn up and members of the organising committee dutifully overfed themselves with stress (the chief organiser himself having grown an extra few strands of white hair :). But before bad news of a cancelled event could be emailed out, Cyclone Ului receded and lady luck smiled upon our UQMSA’s Learn To Surf Event! J
With the clear autumn weather giving a “Malaysia Boleh!” thumbs-up on Saturday morning, participants gathered and boarded the charter bus at UQ at 9 in the morning for a scenic hour-long journey to Currumbin Alley. Currumbin, one of the safer surfing spots in Gold Coast with its gentler waves, welcomed our troupe of eager surfer-wannabes with its breezy and beautiful sandy beach, a picturesque skyline of Surfers Paradise on the horizon to the north, and the occasional Air-Asia jet flying overhead :P (Cooloongatta airport is just next door !).
After sitting through 15 minutes of instruction on wave-catching and prone-to-feet methods by the instructors from Surf Easy Academy, we began braving the waves with our surfboards.
Unfortunately, everyone found out the hard way that surfing (the first time at least!) is not as easy as Liverpool beating Man Utd (=P), but fortunately, everyone had a good time tumbling from their surfboards and rolling in the waves :P Those lucky enough to catch a wave and get to their feet on their boards hooted with great joy, much to the amusement of the pro-surfers around :D
An hour-and-a-half later, our tired and happy group trudged back to the bus after having returned the surfboards and thanking Gary and his team from Surf Easy Academy. We stopped by Surfers Paradise for lunch and some sight-seeing before continuing back to UQ. Our bus finally unloaded us at UQ at 5pm, with everyone exhausted, smiling, and with an unforgettable experience to keep (not to mention tonnes of photos to upload and tag on Facebook :P)
Our UQMSA committee would like to extend a warm thank you to EVERYONE who participated in and made this event a great success J Thanks and see you guys at our next event!
Warmest Regards,
UQMSA Committee.
